What Is Kundli Matching?

Kundli Matching, also called Kundali Milan or Guna Milan, is the Vedic astrology practice of comparing the birth charts of two prospective partners before marriage. Rooted in thousands of years of tradition, it aims to assess the compatibility, harmony, and long-term happiness of a couple by analysing the positions of the Moon and other planets at the time of each person's birth.

The Ashtakuta System: 8 Dimensions of Compatibility

The most widely used method is the Ashtakuta system, which evaluates compatibility across eight categories (kutas), each carrying a specific number of points. The maximum total is 36 Gunas:

KutaMax PointsAssesses
Varna1Spiritual compatibility & ego levels
Vashya2Mutual attraction & control
Tara3Health, wellbeing, and destiny
Yoni4Physical & sexual compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental compatibility & friendship
Gana6Temperament & nature
Bhakuta7Love, health & family prosperity
Nadi8Health of offspring & genetic compatibility

How to Interpret the Score

  • Below 18 points: Generally not recommended — significant incompatibilities may create friction
  • 18–24 points: Acceptable compatibility with some areas needing attention
  • 24–32 points: Good match — a harmonious and stable relationship is likely
  • 32–36 points: Excellent match — rare and highly auspicious

However, the Guna score is just one dimension. A skilled astrologer also examines factors such as Mangal Dosha, the condition of the seventh house (house of marriage), and the overall strength of both charts.

Understanding Mangal Dosha

Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha) occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. It is considered significant in marriage matching because it may create aggression or conflict in the relationship. However, if both partners have Mangal Dosha, the dosha is said to cancel out (Dosha Samya). Various exceptions and remedies also apply.

Beyond Gunas: What Else Is Examined?

A comprehensive Kundli match goes deeper than just Guna points. A thorough analysis includes:

  • Navamsha Chart (D-9): The chart most specific to marriage, revealing the quality of the marital bond over time
  • 7th House Lord: The planet ruling the house of marriage and its placement in both charts
  • Dasha Compatibility: Whether the couple's planetary periods will complement each other during key life stages
  • Longevity and health indicators in both charts

Is Kundli Matching Mandatory?

Kundli matching is a traditional guide, not an absolute mandate. Many families treat it as an important input alongside other considerations such as shared values, emotional maturity, and mutual respect. The purpose of matching is to identify potential challenges early and address them through remedies and awareness — not to create fear or block genuine love.

A balanced astrologer will always consider the full picture, offer remedies where needed, and emphasise that human effort, communication, and devotion ultimately shape the success of any marriage.
